"Why am I learning about this?" you would ask yourself in school. And then one day, you realized you were right all along: your education was missing something very important.
Lessons about money.
Personally, my moment happened on a Saturday in June of 2014 after I totaled up my student loans to $170k. Oh yeah - and I still didn't have a job.
Here are some facts, as this is being written in 2018:
- Almost 50% of student loan borrowers are concerned about paying off this debt
- Americans have over $1 trillion in credit card debt
- 35% of adults in America with a credit file have debt in collections
- 2/3 of Americans would struggle to come up with $1k in an emergency
- Around 29% of American households age 55 and over have no retirement savings
Pretty scary, right? It's clear that millions of Americans are struggling with money every day, taking on way too much debt and living paycheck to paycheck. And don't think for a second that this problem only exists in America!
I think we'd all agree that money is important. Can we also agree that it's tough to succeed financially when you don't have a solid understanding of money and the different ways we use it? My student loan debt would say yes!
